Before you being packing for your trip, check your luggage. Make sure that it is in shape for the rigors of travel. If there is a seam torn, or a zipper malfunction, get it taken care of before your trip. At the airport, be sure to remove shouder straps, add-a-bag strap, hanging hooks, etc. These can easily be torn off by the conveyor belt baggage system and lost. Be sure to remove all old locks. Only TSA approved locks can be used. Look for the "diamond" emblem which insures the lock is TSA approved for airline travel. If if you are not using the old lock, TSA will see it on your luggage and most likely cut it off. Your luggage will often be damaged in this process. The TSA lock can be opened by security with their key if they feel it is necessary. You also cannot use the baggage ties or string, only their TSA approved lock for closing the luggage. Remember to also remove all old bar codes and airline tags from previous trips. You want your luggage to follow you where you are going now, not on the last trip!! While most luggage has a warranty, most of them exclude airline damage so you would be responsible, even when it is brand new luggage. You should make a claim at the airport immediately when you see damage. Airlines require claims to be made then and there, so do not wait! A very few manufacturers like
Briggs & Riley luggage will cover any type of damage including airline damage. It's best to look over your bags prior to leaving the airport.
